Martha Root grew up in the Appalachian
foothills of northeast Alabama spending summers at her grandmother's
farm. It was those lazy wonderful days of swimming and fishing in
the creek, and watching her grandma milk the cow and tend to farm
chores that still rest gently on her mind.
As a stay at home mom with three children, she
began her adventure into the world of business in 1980 when she
introduced her original doll patterns as a means to earn money to
honor a faith promise she made at church. She continued
successfully designing patterns and doll kits for the next five
years.
As a self-taught sculptress, she introduced her
first sculptures of children in 1985, and named them "ALL GOD'S
CHILDREN."
As Martha so aptly states, "My art is the
tangible form of the message in my heart - first to honor Jesus
Christ and secondly, to share the message of scripture that we are
all God's children."
The "All God's Children" line of figurines hold
a special place in Martha's heart and continue to be manufactured in
the Miss Martha Originals factory at Gadsden, Alabama.
During Martha's career as an artist, she has
licensed artwork to Enesco Corporation and Hallmark.
In November of 2005, Martha and artist/friend
Penni Jo Couch collaborated to form Sweetbrier Studio, a subsidiary
(craft division) of Miss Martha Originals, Inc. This new
venture began with the introduction of flexible art molds sculpted
by Martha and Penni Jo. The molds will be hand crafted at the MMO
factory in Gadsden, Alabama.Martha is
currently a member of the National Polymer Clay Guild.
