created using Sweetbrier Studio mold #1017

Project 8 Winter Bird House with snowman

Winter Bird House:

Materials needed:

• Wooden Bird house available at hobby and discount stores. (The one shown cost $ 2.27.)
• Polymer Clay: Red and white.
• Acrylic paint; dark blue, medium blue, black, red, orange and green (or any colors you prefer for the snowman’s hat, mittens and scarf).
• Brushes: 1/2” brush to paint house, small detail brushes to paint snowman and bird’s eye and beak.
• Strong glue like E-6000®.
• Varnish recommended by clay manufacturer.
• Optional: Paper clay may be used instead of polymer clay.
• Optional: Eye screw and 6” of light weight chain or wire for a hanger.

Mold the following:

White polymer clay: One Snowman, 6 each Sn-1 & Sn-2.
Red polymer clay: One bird, one H-1.

If the clay tends to stick in the mold, mist mold lightly with water (remove excess), or lightly brush the mold cavity with talcum powder (remove excess). To demold, gently flex in several directions loosening the part, then flex more fully, lifting or tipping the part from the mold.

1. Paint birdhouse dark blue, paint roof and base medium Blue. Allow to dry.
2. Demolding: Avoid touching the soft, molded part with your fingernails. Use the pads of your fingers to handle the molded parts.
3. Flatten the back of each piece before de-molding.
4. Place all parts on a baking surface. Bake following manufacturer’s instructions. Allow to cool.
5. Paint the snowman as follows: Hat - black acrylic (or brown, tan, green, etc.) Eyes & Buttons: Using stylus or tiny brush, dot the eyes and buttons with black paint. Mittens- Green acrylic thinned so that the texture of the mitten will show through the paint. (Or use blue, yellow etc.) Scarf - Red acrylic thinned so that the texture of the scarf shows through the paint. (Or use blue, yellow etc.) ‘Carrot’ nose - orange paint Hatband - Use full strength color of choice on the hat band. Fringe on scarf and Snowflake- lightly dry brush with white acrylic paint to bring out detail. Optional: use any full strength paint to make dots on hatband. Allow to dry.
